Aztec Dance
Founded in Colorado in 1969 by Capitan Raúl Chavez Portillo after immigrating from Mazatlán, Mexico, Grupo Huitzilopochtli carries forward the traditional danza of his ancestors and a lifelong commitment to community, culture, and ceremony. For more than five decades, Raúl maintained an open-door philosophy, welcoming all who wished to learn about and celebrate Mexica traditions through dance, music, storytelling, and spiritual practice.
Following Raúl’s passing in 2022, leadership of the grupo was passed to his daughter, Maria Chavez, who now serves as capitana. Under her guidance, Grupo Huitzilopochtli continues its mission as a kapulli rooted in the Indigenous cultures of North America, especially those of Mexico. The group remains dedicated to preserving and advancing cultural heritage while fostering education, spirituality, and community connection for future generations.
Today, Grupo Huitzilopochtli proudly operates under the umbrella of the Colorado Folk Arts Council, one of Colorado’s oldest cultural arts organizations.
