AZTEC DANCE Renee Fajardo and Larry Medina are the project directors for the grupo HUITZILOPOCHTL. The group is under the direction of Capitán Raul Chavez. He is a 6th generation Danzante, healer, and educator originating from Mazatlan, Mexico . The group operates in conjugation with the Colorado Folk Arts Council, a 501(c) 3 non profit. Together these two groups strive to provide excellence in cultural programming and education. Winners of a prestigious 2009 Colorado Endowment for the Humanities Award, CFAC and HUITZILOPOCHTL are one of Colorado's most respected arts education providers. They offer 50 free performances per year at schools and churches. Through art and culture, Grupo Huitzilopochtli has contributed time and effort to enrich the lives of Mexican youth and their families. Bridging the gap between Mexican youth and Chicano/Colorado youth, this group has demonstrated for the past 40 years how the arts can heal through cultural inclusivity and respect for one another. Azteca Arts Colorado is a collaboration of artists with roots in the indigenous cultures of North America, particularly Mexico. Our collective goal is to promote the awareness and advancement of our people's beautiful heritage. We promote the preservation of our culture through educational, economical, spiritual and nutritional growth, utilizing the arts to achieve these goals.
